Investment in the Pink Tower Approach

East Hanningfield Church of England Primary Academy

Canonium Learning Trust has continued its investment in the Pink Tower approach at one of our schools, East Hanningfield Church of England Primary Academy. This builds on similar developments at Woodham Walter, Langham and St Michael’s Ramsey, where the approach is already embedded.

This is part of a deliberate Trust-wide strategy: strengthening classroom environments so they actively support independence, concentration and secure foundations in literacy and mathematics.

What the Investment Has Delivered

At East Hanningfield, the work has included:

High-quality natural wood shelving to improve organisation and accessibility

Carefully sequenced Montessori-informed resources across core curriculum areas

Clear presentation of materials to promote independence and sustained engagement

Structured zoning to support small-group and focused learning

Enhanced early language and reading provision

The classrooms are now calmer and more ordered, with resources presented purposefully rather than stored. Pupils can independently select, use and return materials, strengthening executive function and personal responsibility.

Educational Rationale

The Pink Tower approach is rooted in the concept of the prepared environment: structured, uncluttered spaces where progression is visible and learning builds sequentially.

Across our schools, this supports:

Secure early number sense through concrete mathematical materials

Development of fine motor control and self-regulation

Stronger vocabulary and language acquisition

Inclusive practice that benefits all learners, including those with additional needs

For small primary schools in particular, the quality of environment and resource design has a direct impact on outcomes. This investment is therefore educational, not cosmetic.

A Trust-Wide Model

By rolling out this approach across multiple schools — including Woodham Walter, Langham and St Michael’s Ramsey — we ensure consistency of practice while respecting each school’s context.

Through shared expertise, coordinated procurement and disciplined financial stewardship, we are able to invest in high-quality provision sustainably. This ensures that pupils across Canonium benefit from structured, well-prepared learning environments, regardless of the size or location of their school.

This is a practical example of how strong systems and collaboration enable our schools to flourish together.
